Perhaps some skeptical readers are wondering at this point if I actually do all these things myself, especially the household chores. Well, you’ll just have to ask my wife (but remember that somebody has to find time to sit, drink coffee, and write books). Seriously, though, these are mere suggestions, and I’m sure you can come up with more that are compatible with your own life routines.

The main point is to change our perspective on these little daily labors. They need not be drudgery. Some may burn but a few calories here or there, but add them all together, and their effects can really be substantial. We can use them to help us become fit, both physically and spiritually, if we put our bodies, minds, and souls into them.

The potential spiritual benefits of good old-fashioned work have been known for millennia, of course. Ora et labora, pray and work, is an ages-old monastic credo, a Christian call to the highest actions of the mind and body. St. Paul advised us to pray always.21 There’s no reason our minds can’t be focused on higher things while carrying out those little daily activities that improve both our houses and our “temples,” burn calories, and get jobs done. Just as we can “offer up” the discomfort of intense strength training, we can also “offer up” the toil of laborious chores — and profit in our hearts and waistlines in the meanwhile.
